Queen Victoria & Dash

Dash, one of the best-known King Charles spaniels in history, was part of Queen Victoria’s life from girlhood to the birth of her first child. The dog was Victoria’s close companion from 1833 on. Victoria had an isolated childhood, and Dash was a constant comfort; in her journal she regularly praised the dog as “dear sweet little Dash.”

The Queen made a splash when she gave Dash his usual bath immediately after her coronation on June 28, 1838. Dash died in 1840 and was buried in Windsor Home Park beneath a marble effigy.

Winston Churchill & Jock

The wartime prime minister earned a reputation as a stalwart character who refused to be kept waiting—except when it came to his marmalade-colored cat, Jock. Rumor had it that the famous leader wouldn’t sit down to dinner until the cat decided to amble to the table.

Churchill was so in love with Jock that after his death in 1965, his family requested that a similarly colored cat would always have the freedom to live and roam at Chartwell, the estate where Churchill and his wife, Clementine, spent many years. Today, Jock IV is on the prowl.

Queen Elizabeth’s Many Corgis

Queen Elizabeth has always had a particular weakness for Welsh Corgis, a breed she has loved since she was a young child. Since she became Queen in 1952, she has owned more than 30 Corgis. The dogs have been depicted in many works of art since the Queen’s reign, including portrayal on the 2002 Royal Golden Jubilee Coins.

Elizabeth’s many Corgis have included: Emma, Linnet, Monty, Holly, Willow, Crackers, Susan, Rozavel Sue, and Dookie.

Kate Middleton & Lupo

Kate Middleton was a mom before Prince George came along—to her male cocker spaniel, Lupo, who was adopted just before Christmas in 2011.

Prince William mentioned Lupo’s progress as a big brother in a recent interview: “For me, Catherine and now little George are my priorities — and Lupo. Lupo is coping all right, actually. As a lot of people know who have got dogs and bringing a newborn back, they take a little bit of time to adapt, but he’s been all right so far. He’s been slobbering around the house a bit, so he’s perfectly happy.”
