Pet Sunscreen

Animals are just as vulnerable to sunburns and skin cancer as humans. In fact, some animals may be in even more danger of sun damage than people. Animals with short hair, lighter colored skin or noses, or white fur are especially susceptible to sun damage.

Doggie dangers

If your dog spends a lot of time walking with you outside or playing at the lake, it may be time to rethink how much they’re exposed to the sun. Lighter skinned dogs and animals who spend plenty of time in the sun are at more serious risk of burns and cancer.

When outside, apply some specialty sunscreen just for animals. There are lots of choices on the market today, from sprays to sticks and everything in between. Certain dog breeds including Collies, Boxers, and Dobermans are especially sensitive to the sun and need extra protection. Sunscreen can help reduce and prevent damage, but the ideal option is to limit time in the sun.

Feline sun worshipers

Cats love to lounge in sunny windows, but too much exposure can hurt them in the long term. Hairless cats and those with white ears are especially vulnerable to sunburns even if they aren’t outside. A specialty sunscreen for cats should be applied before your feline spends time in the rays.

Horses can get sunburned, too

Horses who spend lots of time outside, as most horses generally do every day, should wear sunscreen or a protective sun covering. Grazing horses are likely rubbing sunscreen off as they roll in the grass, so be sure to reapply often.

Protective gear can’t hurt

Many online shops and pet boutiques now sell special sun-guard gear for pets, including hats, SPF shirts, and booties. Whether your pet will put up with an outfit is a question only you can answer, but if your animal will wear protective clothing, I say go for it. Sometimes children’s and infant clothing will fit just fine, too, and thanks to a generation of parents who are hyper aware of the need for sun protection, SPF-friendly options abound.
