Health Benefits of Owning a Dog

Everyone who has ever loved an animal knows what a great friend a pet can be. At LazyPaw Animal Hospitals, we’re not just animal lovers, we’re doctors, which is why we want to share some of the ways pets are good for more than just the human soul. Animal companions provide proven health benefits for everyone from children to those suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Fido may be helping your allergies, not aggravating them.

Former wisdom said that kids who grew up with pets were more likely to develop allergies to them over the years, but one study found that children who grow up with furry animals in the home have less risk of allergies and asthma later on. The study further discovered that if babies live with a dog in the home, they are less likely to show evidence of pet allergies and have eczema. The study also found these infants’ immune systems were stronger.

Dogs are natural matchmakers.

Dating online can be a drag, but taking Fido out for some sunshine can make dating as easy as a walk in the park. Dogs are natural conversation starters, which can ease shy people out of their shells. Oftentimes, chitchat about Fido’s newest trick becomes a real conversation.

Pets help us age more gracefully.

Lynette Hart, PhD and associate professor of the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, found that Alzheimer’s patients have fewer outbursts and anxiety troubles if there is an animal at home. Walking a dog or caring for a pet gives people both exercise and companionship. Some insurance companies even ask if people have pets as part of their medical screening, which sometimes tips the rates in favor of people over age 75 who do.

It’s hard to be depressed when a furball is licking your face.

In multiple studies, people who adopt animals suddenly become less stressed and anxious, have lower occurrences of depression, and even achieve lower blood pressure. Over time, less stress can lower levels of chemicals including cortisol and norepinephrine that can damage the immune system and ultimately lead to plaque buildup in arteries if they accumulate too long.

Get moving.

If you’re too pooped to hit the gym, guess who still needs a walk? Buster the wonder-dog. Animals keep us on the go, whether we’re hitting the trail with Fido or getting cardio in while trying to wrestle Fluffy from the tree again. All those steps (and trees) add up to a more active life.
