Petiquette: How to Bring Your Dog to a Store or Restaurant

Man’s best friend is a great companion at home and on the town. However, before getting Fido ready for a road trip, consider the context of where you plan to go.

If your dog is an itty bitty Yorkie, you’ll probably have an easier time toting them along to the store. However, if you have a massive Mastiff, stores may be less welcoming. Many restaurants welcome pets if they have outdoor seating, which makes it easier to take Fido along to dine. Some stores are more obliging than others, and you have to respect their wishes.

If your dog is aggressive, don’t bring them along

If you know your dog can be cranky, invest some time in training before trying field trips. Taking a skittish or aggressive dog in public will likely scare and violate them, which will lead to worse behavior and possibly injury. If your dog frightens a kid, you could emotionally scar a well-meaning child for life!

Restaurants with patios often welcome dogs.

Restaurants won’t permit dogs inside, but many allow dogs on patios outside. If it’s a hot day, check to see if there is shade available to keep your pet cool, and bring along a water bowl in case the restaurant doesn’t offer one. Many local blogs and helpful sites such as BringFido.com offer listings for pet friendly restaurants.

Call ahead.

Some stores will love to have your animal, and others will cringe or ask you to leave. The best solution is to call before you visit. Explain what type of dog you have, what size they are, and how they typically behave in public. The decision will rest with the manager on duty, so if you get a green light, make sure they will still be working when you plan to arrive because the next manager may not feel the same. If you can’t get a clear answer on whether your dog is welcome, let Fido hang out at home.

Be mindful of laws.

Grocery stores don’t permit pets except service animals, so don’t try to bring your Chihuahua into Costco. The guy who counts your groceries before you leave will not be amused!
