Reintroducing Your Shelter Dog To Potty Training

Congratulations on rescuing your shelter dog! You have changed the life of your furry companion forever, and they will always remember that!

Now that you have introduced your pup to your house and family, it is time to help them master the art of potty training. Whether they were previously potty trained or brand new to the idea, it is good to reintroduce it now that they are in a new environment.

Use these helpful steps when introducing your new pup to potty training, or if you’re new life long friend needs a refresher course..

Select an area

Whether you choose the front or back yard to take your pup out, just be consistent. Get them accustomed to going out the same door and using the same grassy area each time.

Set a schedule

.
Setting a feeding schedule for your pup is a must. Free feeding can be dangerous, and will make training difficult. A schedule will give you a better idea of when your dog will need to go outside.

Veterinarians usually recommend feeding your dog twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.  The portion sizes are based on the size of the dog. Depending on your own personal schedule, leave plenty of time to feed your dog and allow about 15 to 30 minutes maximum for food to settle before taking them outside to eliminate.

Use praise and rewards

The best way to help your pup understand the concept of going outside when he or she needs to go “potty,” is to show excitement and praise, and of course, rewards. When Fido or Fifi goes outside successfully, show excitement and give them a treat. Your dog will begin to look forward to going outside, because they know they will be rewarded and praised.

Prepare for accidents

Unfortunately, your dog will still have the occasional accident in the house no matter how long you have been training. When this happens, it is very important to clean up the mess immediately. Always choose pet-safe products, and make sure they are odor eliminating. Avoid products containing ammonia, which make the odor stronger to your pet, and attract them to eliminate in the same area again.

Above all, be patient and understanding with your new forever friend. Give our staff at Lazy Paw Vet a call if you are having trouble with potty training your pet or have further questions. We are happy to help, and we wish you the best with your new shelter pet!
