On Friday, November 8, 2013 I had the distinct pleasure of being a guest reader for the Bledsoe Elementary School Literacy League, a program designed to bring community leaders together to inspire young readers. This program was spear headed by Laurie Cook, this year’s book fair chair and literacy league coordinator. I was lucky enough to be scheduled for four sessions during which I read and spoke to both 5th grade and Kindergarten students.

Readers were invited to bring books of their own selection or to use classroom favorites. Dr. Bilhartz and I love books so I had no shortage at home to choose from, and I took this opportunity to read some of my favorites from authors including the late, great Dr. James Harriet, Peggy Rathmann, Gary Paulsen and many others.
I’m still not sure who had more fun, me or the students. I had a great time sharing rural veterinary practice stories with Ms. Hannah’s class and seeing the incredulous looks when I described cars without heaters and radios and the lack of Penicillin! In Ms. Damm’s class we read a book about a dog sled training run which I supplemented with Iditarod tales of my own. Ms. Swiney’s students asked wonderful questions and seemed to be comforted by Verdi’s story of how you can grow up but not lose your identity or love of fun. My final set of students were very keen, great participants and treated me with the most rousing rendition of “We’re Going On a Bear Hunt!”
The program’s stated goal: “The desire to inspire young readers and a belief that being a part of the literacy league matters” was definitely achieved. Thank you Bledsoe students for treating me to a wonderful day of reading!
