Four DIY Pet Grooming Tips

As a pet owner, is it important to keep your four legged friends looking and feeling their best! Keeping up with a grooming regimen is essential to your pet’s health. Scheduling regular trips to your vet and groomer are the best ways to do this, but there are several things you can do at home to maintain your pet’s appearance and health in between visits.

Below are some pet grooming tips you can follow at home to keep your pet looking and feeling fabulous!

Start with the right brush

.
Choosing the right brush for your pet is important. Always use a brush that is made specifically for pet grooming, and take into consideration the type of coat your pet has. There are different brushes for thicker and thinner coats, and the right one will protect the health of your pet’s coat and make brushing easier and more enjoyable for your pup. Older pets often have sensitive skin, and some animals are prone to skin allergies and skin tags. Make sure you use a brush with softer bristles in these cases.

Check the ears often.

Your pet’s ears can serve as an environment for a variety of potential ailments, including, ear infections, yeast infections and ear mites.  Checking and cleaning your pet’s ears regularly can reduce the chances of your pet suffering from these painful conditions. There are plenty of preventative ear cleansing solutions available. Ask your veterinarian about which products would be best for your pet.

Use pet products only.

When it comes to bathing your pet, always make sure to use shampoo and conditioner that are specially formulated for pet use. Take the time to read the descriptions on the products, and choose the best ones for your pet’s coat and skin. Avoid using human shampoos and conditioners, because they can often dry out or irritate your pet’s skin.

Trim nails frequently

.
Trimming your pet’s nails may seem simple, but you will soon realize it can be quite the task. The best thing you can do is get your pet used to having their paws touched by playing with them regularly. This will prevent them from putting up a struggle when it comes time for a trimming. If you choose to trim your pet’s nails at home, just remember that the nails have a blood supply called the “quick,” and cutting nails too short can cause a LOT of bleeding! This is very painful for your pet, so make sure you are prepared and well educated before taking on the task.

At Lazy Paw we encourage you to use these tips and steps regularly to ensure you are doing your part to keep your pet looking and feeling healthy!
